My Heart This Solo

Where did my heart pick up that low measured beat?

It drums me through a jungle of so many lives,

all different, all possible, then calls me uniquely

to be me when I want to be them, all of them.

Like some blind beast stalking an elusive light

my heart drums through a jumble of what seems possible:

a slow, relentless march from some place out of mind

here where fields and forests are the measure of all things.

That soft, thudding footfall began as the quick-step

of some wild, frightened thing running from the night

when I was cast breathless upon a lonely shore.

It was before that, long before the trauma of earth

and air that the heartless sea taught me to dance,

taught my heart this solo to a darkly slowing beat.
